A dental implant is made of the metal titanium, which is biocompatible with the human body.\u00a0 It is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone to replace the tooth root of the lost tooth. Once the dental implant is placed in the jaw, a dental crown which is shaped like a natural tooth is attached to the dental implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
Not only are they compatible with your body, but they also help to preserve your existing jaw bone.\u00a0 When your natural tooth is lost, the jawbone that would usually house that tooth begins to break down, also known as resorption gradually.\u00a0 When the bone in the area of the missing tooth starts to break down, it can cause nearby teeth to shift or tilt into the space.\u00a0 The loss of bone can also cause the appearance of your face to change as well.\u00a0 Unlike a dental bridge, because the implant is placed in your existing jawbone, it helps to preserve that bone by stimulating the bone when pressure is applied.\u00a0 Pressure is used when you perform natural functions such as chewing.<\/p>\n
A dental implant will also act and function as close to your natural tooth as possible.\u00a0 A dental bridge will cause bone loss over time, and some patients find that food gets stuck under the bridge, with a dental implant, you will not have this problem if you floss the tooth as you would naturally.\u00a0 There is also the possibility of having recurring dental decay with a dental bridge because it can be harder to clean if the correct dental cleaning aids are not used.<\/p>\n
A dental implant can be used to replace a single missing tooth, many missing teeth or to secure a denture firmly.\u00a0 Implant supported dentures are far more stable than regular dentures, and they allow you to eat almost all of your favourite foods without fear of them becoming loose or sliding.<\/p>\n
The dentist will assess your oral situation to determine if you are a good candidate for implants.\u00a0 You must have adequate bone for the implant to be attached to.\u00a0 If you have trouble wearing dentures, you should be able to benefit from implants.<\/p>\n
The first step is to place the dental implant into the jawbone.\u00a0 Once that is done, it is allowed to heal and fuse to your existing bone naturally.\u00a0 The next step involves attaching the artificial tooth (dental crown) to the top of the implant.<\/p>\n
