It is also called a partial. It is a removable appliance which makes for easier cleaning. These dentures are designed to match the colour of your natural teeth and gum tissue.

Partial Denture or Dental Bridge?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you will be presented with a few tooth replacement options. Unlike a partial, a dental bridge is not removable. It is a permanently fixed tooth replacement option. Because it is permanent, it is more stable when it comes to chewing and speaking compared to a partial. A partial denture will eventually become loose over time and require either adjustments or fabrication of a new denture. Because both options fill or hold the space of the missing tooth, they both prevent nearby teeth from shifting or driving into the gap.

Should You Choose A Partial Denture?

While it can be used as a permanent solution, it is not recommended for long term use. A partial will allow you to prevent drifting of teeth into the gap left by a missing tooth, but it will not prevent bone loss in the affected area. A dental implant, on the other hand, will prevent bone loss in the affected area. Because the dental implant is placed in the bone, it helps to stimulate bone growth in the area the implant was placed.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you when choosing a tooth replacement option that you are comfortable with. It is important to note that if too much bone loss has occurred in the mouth, future tooth replacement options such as a dental implant or implant-supported denture may not be possible without additional treatment first. When too much bone is lost in the mouth, bone grafting will be necessary to build up the bone to a suitable level before a dental implant can be placed.

If you have a missing tooth or are missing multiple teeth, talk to your dentist about tooth replacement options as soon as possible.

About Dr. Joseph Salvaggio

Located in Brampton, Ontario Dr. Joseph Salvaggio has been practicing general, cosmetic, and implant dentistry for over 20 years.
