Tissue and bone regeneration can improve the dignity, function, and appearance of healthy gum and bone support around teeth, restoring the bone height and attachments to adequate levels. Guided tissue and bone regeneration help to extend the lifespan of a tooth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of Tissue and Bone Loss<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Periodontal disease is the most common cause of loss of gum and bone support. Bacteria build up around the teeth and gums causes damage in gum recession, periodontal pockets and receding bone and level.<\/li>\r\n<li>Trauma that damages the gum and bone support around a tooth\/teeth<\/li>\r\n<li>Gum recession from aggressive tooth brushing, clenching\/grinding habits or traumatic bite<\/li>\r\n<li>Tooth extractions<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Guided Tissue and Bone Regeneration is Used<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Bone build up around implants and tooth extraction sites<\/li>\r\n<li>Sinus lift for future implants<\/li>\r\n<li>Gum recession<\/li>\r\n<li>Bone loss from periodontal disease<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Guided Tissue and Bone Regeneration is Not Used<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>In patients who smoke<\/li>\r\n<li>In patients with inadequate oral hygiene<\/li>\r\n<li>Traumatic bite (when the way the teeth bite together will cause trauma to the graft over time)<\/li>\r\n<li>Systemic health concerns such as diabetes<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Procedure<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A barrier membrane is placed into the affected area to cover the defect and promote gum, connective tissue, or bone growth. Also, the membrane helps protect the site from salivary contamination and mechanical disruption from tooth brushing. Two types of barrier membranes are available, resorbable and non-resorbable (which biodegrades.) The type of barrier membrane used will depend on the case. Healthy, slow-growing cells will integrate into the membrane.
