Dry cracks in dirtDry mouth is a lack of saliva which results in a mouth that is not adequately moisturized or wet. Xerostomia is the clinical term used when referring to dry mouth. While it is normal for everyone to occasionally experience a dry mouth, having a mouth that is always dry is not normal.

Possible Dry Mouth Symptoms

If you think you have dry mouth or xerostomia, look for these symptoms:

  • A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth or throat
  • Trouble chewing, swallowing, tasting or speaking
  • A burning feeling in the mouth
  • A dry, rough tongue
  • Cracked lips
  • Gum irritation
  • More frequent tooth decay
  • Mouth sores
  • Bad breath

Dry Mouth Treatment & Relief

Relief of dry mouth symptoms depends on the extent of the dry mouth.

  • Chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free candies is an excellent way to stimulate saliva flow.
  • Limit caffeine consumption because consuming caffeine leads to a drier mouth.
  • Avoid alcohol: alcohol will cause dryness of the mouth.
  • Avoid mouthwash that has alcohol.
  • Stop using tobacco in all formats (smoking or chewing).
  • Sip on water continuously throughout the day.
  • Avoid decongestants and antihistamines.
  • Avoid breathing through your mouth, breathe through your nose.
  • Use a humidifier.

Dry Mouth Products

Look for dry mouth products that contain xylitol. Examples of products that contain xylitol include Oasis mouth spray, Xylimelts, and mouth Kote. Similarly, you can look for products that contain carboxymethylcellulose, such as Biotene Oral Balance.

Use mouthwash that is specially suited to relieve dry mouth symptoms. Examples include ACT Total Care Dry Mouth and Biotene Dry Mouth Rinse.

Dry Mouth Precautions

While treating dry mouth symptoms, it is important to ensure that teeth are kept healthy even in the absence of saliva. Avoid consuming sugary drinks and foods since there is less saliva to flush away these substances. Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride to help protect teeth. Similarly, try to use mouthwash that contains fluoride as well.
