Things to Avoid Doing After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants can (and should) fully restore your grin. Patients wouldn’t bother with the posts otherwise. That said, they’ll only work if you heal from the placement surgery. Anything less will cause your new teeth to fail pretty quickly. Still, your recovery will be easy if you don’t engage in certain actions. Your Brampton dentist can even tell you about those practices. To that end, here are four things to avoid doing after dental implant surgery.

Smoking

Since implant surgery can take a while, you may feel restless once it’s over. You could easily be tempted to smoke a cigar or cigarette in that case. Even so, refrain from smoking as best you can.

You see, tobacco products are harmful right after implant surgery. Smoking or chewing them keeps your mouth from healing properly. Your implants are then at high risk of failing to fuse with your jawbone. Should that happen, you’ll suffer from implant failure.

Intense Exercise

Following implant surgery, perhaps you’d like an intense workout. Maybe you think that vigorous exercise would burn up your nervous energy. However, it’s best to hold off on “feeling the burn.”

The issue is how physical activity elevates blood flow. This effect would lead to bleeding around the implant site. You’d then suffer a delayed recovery or cause the prosthetic to fail. As such, don’t engage in intense exercise for 2-3 days after surgery. You should instead rest until your dentist clears you.

Spitting & Rinsing

Once the surgery’s anesthetic wears off, your mouth may feel weird. That’s only natural – you have an implant post where your tooth was. Regardless, don’t do a lot of rinsing or spitting. These acts would make your situation worse.

If you don’t already know, a blood clot must form after surgery. It ensures your treatment site will heal well. Sadly, the clot won’t form if you rinse or spit a lot the day after treatment. You’ll instead get a dry socket that causes pain and other issues.

Hot & Hard Foods

You may have a meal not long after your surgery. Still, don’t eat any hot or hard foods for a few days. These items could lead to implant failure.

As it turns out, hot and hard foods delay your healing. They’d likely irritate the gums around your implant or dislodge your blood clot. To avoid that outcome, follow a soft food diet in the days following your surgery. Softer meals give your mouth time to heal without obstacles.

Clearly, the things to avoid doing after dental implant surgery are crucial. Memorize and refrain from them so your implants do their job!
