Dentures are astounding prosthetic appliances that can replace a few, many, or all of a patient’s teeth with beautiful and functional restorations. If these devices fit well, they can greatly enhance a patient’s chewing and speaking ability while remaining perfectly comfortable. However, dentures can lose their fit over time due to wear and tear and the changing shape of the mouth, and oral adhesive products may be the best way to address this issue between relines. Here’s a quick look at a few types of adhesive products and how they may be able to help you.
What Types of Denture Adhesives Are Available?
Most denture adhesives come in one of three forms, those being:
- Creams: These products can be precisely administered to the points of your dentures that make contact with your gums using a fine applicator tip that helps prevent mess.
- Powders: Some patients prefer these over creams because they find them to be simpler to control during application as well as easier to clean up.
- Strips: These products are designed to be especially easy to apply and remove.
Adhesive creams, powders, and strips can all provide a sturdy hold that lasts all day while helping the user stay comfortable.
How Can My Dentist Help My Dentures Fit Better?
While denture adhesives can be a great way to help your appliance fit comfortably, they are only temporary solutions and it will eventually be necessary to have your restorations adjusted or replaced. If your dentures aren’t fitting well, your dentist may be able to address the problem by:
- Performing a reline: This involves adding material to the points of contact between the bases of the dentures and the gums to compensate for the atrophy of the jawbone and soft tissues.
- Adjusting the bite: Sometimes modifying the dimensions of the artificial teeth of the dentures is the best way to bring the patient’s bite into a more comfortable and functional alignment.
- Replacing the denture: Traditional dentures that receive excellent care can last up to seven years, but it will eventually be necessary to replace the device. You may need a new appliance sooner than that if your denture is severely damaged.
- Dental implants: Dentures supported by dental implants surgically inserted into the jawbone can last much longer than traditional appliances, and they deliver significantly superior chewing power.
Don’t let the poor fit of your dentures cause you constant discomfort. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best way to help your appliance fit comfortably.
