Learn How To Clean Between Your Teeth

May 25, 2021

Each tooth is like a box; they have 5 surfaces that require cleaning. By using a toothbrush, you are cleaning the top, front and back surfaces, but due to the diameter of the bristles, they are unable to access between the teeth. That means that if you are brushing your teeth but not using an interdental aid such as floss, you are missing nearly half the surfaces in your mouth! Bacteria are constantly forming on your tooth surfaces and even underneath your gums, and the same is true for between your teeth.

Gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums from the presence of oral bacteria, is thought to affect up to 90% of the population in varying severity. Gingivitis can lead to gum disease, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity and even loose teeth. Gingivitis can occur localized or generalized, and therefore it is important to clean all tooth surfaces to prevent it.

Several options are available for cleaning between your teeth including dental floss, dental floss wands, interdental brushes and water floss.

Dental Floss

Dental floss is probably the first tool that comes to mind when you think of cleaning between your teeth. Dental floss is meant to be wrapped around the middle fingers and inserted into each contact. It comes in varying widths and can be waxed or un-waxed.

Dental Floss Wands

If you have trouble using strand floss, you may find floss wands easier to use. Floss wands consist of a small piece of floss connected to a prong like handle. They require less dexterity and are beneficial for kids and seniors.

Interdental Brushes

These are thin, handy brushes that are able to fit into contacts with ease. They eliminate the need to snap floss into each contact, as they are used from the side and inserted into the contact at the gum line. Interdental brushes come in different widths and can be selected based on the contacts.

Water Floss

Water floss is a fun gadget to use for people who just know they won’t get into the habit of flossing or using interdental brushes. Water floss acts as a kind of power washer, and is used to flush out bacteria from between the teeth.

It is important to select the right interdental cleaning aid that works best for you. Contact us today if you have any questions about which tool to choose and why.
