Tips for Choosing a Toothbrush

October 19, 2020

Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes generally come from different brands, which differ slightly. Some brands provide a circular head and use an oscillating motion, and other brands provide an oval head and use a sweeping motion or vibrational motion. There are several different toothbrushes in each brand’s roster so make sure to pick the best one for your mouth.

Several unique gadgets to electric toothbrushes are timers, pressure indicators and even cleaning stations for the heads. It may be beneficial to try these toothbrushes out. Some stores offer a display where you can hold, turn on, and view each toothbrush’s various heads. Generally speaking, electric toothbrushes provide a superior clean and do a better job of accessing the teeth and gums than manual toothbrushes.

Manual Toothbrushes

There are so many different options for manual toothbrushes, and it can be overwhelming while in the store trying to pick one out. Pick a manual toothbrush based on the needs you have for your mouth.

Large grip vs. small grip – A large grip is excellent for people with lower dexterity and children. A large grip helps you to hold the toothbrush firmly to access the back teeth.

Large heads vs. small head – A smaller headed toothbrush usually does a better job than a larger headed toothbrush simply because the larger headed toothbrush is challenging to get to the back teeth. Especially for a child, the smaller the head, the better so they can move their cheeks out of the way and access their back teeth.

Soft bristles vs. super soft bristles – It is never recommended to use a medium or stiff bristles toothbrush because they are simply too abrasive to the teeth and gums. A soft-bristled toothbrush helps people with recession or tooth sensitivity be extra gentle on the teeth and gums.

Long Handled Toothbrushes – These are great for children who are learning to brush their teeth, and mom/dad/ guardian helps them get the hang of it. Brushing can be simulated, so the child understands what brushing on their own feels like.
