What is BOTOX®?
Botox® is a polypeptide made by a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium found in soil, Clostridium botulinum. That’s a lot of jargon, but a quick summary is that like a lot of products we use in our office (such as fluoride), we’re simply taking something from nature, refining it, and using it to treat patients using its unique properties.
BOTOX® Treatment for TMJ Discomfort, Migraines, & Teeth Grinding
Botox® works by temporarily blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it’s injected. When this is done in the forehead and around the nose, the skin appears smoother. But when it’s administered into strained jaw and facial muscles, it reduces tension by decreasing the intensity of contractions.
Often, all of the problems listed above stem from a misaligned bite that is causing the jaw muscles to overwork, leading to exhaustion and soreness that can radiate throughout the head and neck. Botox® works so well because it directly addresses the underlying source of the problem in many cases.
Who is a Good Candidate for Therapeutic BOTOX®?
We typically recommend Botox® for patients who:
- Have a persistently sore or stiff jaw
- Experience headaches most days
- Have severe migraines more than once a month
- Struggle with worn/sensitive teeth due to grinding at night
- Don’t experience relief using OTC medication
- Want to avoid using stronger pain medication
- Have tried other methods and haven’t been successful
- Could benefit from a more involved treatment but want to remain comfortable in the meantime
The Benefits of BOTOX®
Botox® is a safe and effective therapy that has been utilized this way for over 30 years. In that time, over 200 studies have rigorously examined it, leading to wide approval in Canada, the US, and Europe.
Most treatments only take about 10-15 minutes in our office. After two weeks, the Botox® will be in full effect, so your pain and clenching should improve drastically. This can easily last for three to four months before another treatment is needed. In that time, our team can work on a more permanent solution.
