What You Should Know About Gum Inflammation

Inflamed Gums Gum inflammation is a common term used to refer to gingivitis. Gingivitis describes an oral condition where the gums have become swollen and inflamed, hence the term gum inflammation. In addition to inflamed gums, the gums also bleed easily when touched, brushed or flossed. The gums are light pink or pinkish-red in health, but they take on a red appearance when gingivitis is present.

How Does Gum Inflammation Occur?

The gums become inflamed and swollen when plaque bacteria builds up due to left-over food debris that is not removed from the mouth. The plaque irritates the gums and causes them to become red, tender and swollen. The gums also bleed easily when flossing or brushing teeth. Gums may also bleed while eating certain foods depending on the severity of the gum disease. It is important to note that patients who smoke regularly may experience reduced symptoms of gum disease. Smoking may mask the effects of gum disease because smoking limits blood flow to the mouth.

Preventing Gum Disease

While gum disease can lead to more serious issues in the mouth, it is fortunately easy to treat and prevent it. The first step in preventing gum disease from occurring is to have a regular oral care routine. A thorough oral care routine should include brushing at least twice a day, once in the morning, and once before going to bed. While it is ideal to brush and floss after every meal, flossing at least once before going to bed is a good start. Is it vital to ensure that you are using the correct brushing and flossing technique. Learn the proper technique here – how to brush your teeth properly.
