4 Factors That Affect the Cost of Dentures

They can help you maintain your facial shape, give you back some of your bite power, and fill in the gaps in your smile. As helpful as dentures are, how can you know how much they’re going to cost? Read on to learn about four factors that affect the cost of dentures.

#1: What They’re Made Out Of

Dentures are made from several materials, including acrylic, porcelain, resin, nylon, or metal. The materials used to make your dentures, the quality, and the materials used will largely influence the price. Though cheaper dentures are more affordable, they’re usually made from brittle plastic. So, while your upfront cost will be low, you’ll have to get replacements much sooner. Higher-quality dentures give you more bang for your buck and typically have an acrylic body with teeth made from either the same material or porcelain. They’re much stronger, look more natural, and can last five to seven years with proper care.

#2: Type of Dentures

There are several different types of dentures. If you still have some natural teeth left, you’ll want to get partial dentures. Partials are more affordable since they replace fewer teeth and attach to your remaining pearly whites. Since full dentures need to replace all of the teeth in your mouth and can’t use your natural ones for support, they will likely cost more.

#3: Preparatory Treatments

During your denture consultation, your dentist will examine your oral cavity to determine if there’s anything that could affect the process, like infections, decay, or previous dental work. They’ll suggest preparatory dental work like extractions or gum disease therapy based on their findings. If there aren’t any issues present, your dentist will give you the OK to move forward with treatment.  Preliminary treatments will add to the total cost, so it’s best to find out if you’ll need work done before you start the process so you can factor that into the final price.

#4: Insurance Coverage

Luckily, most full dental insurance plans include some restorative coverage. That means up to 50% of the cost of your dentures will likely be covered. Deductibles and co-pays still apply, so make sure to keep that in mind when determining the cost. Additionally, due to annual maximum coverage limits, getting your dentures in a year when you’ve already had other procedures means your coverage may be considerably less than 50%.

As you can see, many factors affect the cost of denture treatment. Make sure to discuss these factors with your dentist and check to see how much coverage your insurance company offers so you can ensure that your new smile is as affordable as possible!
